www.sportsecyclopedia.comWashington Presidents The Washington Capitals who all season have been the best team in the NHL secured home ice throughout the playoffs with a 4-1 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Verizon Center. It is the second time in team history that the Capitals have claimed the President's Trophy given to the best NHL team in the regular season. The Capitals don't need to be reminded that the President's Trophy often is the kiss of death for teams seeking to win the Stanley Cup, as just eight teams have won the grand prize in the 30 years that President's Trophy has been awarded. When the Capitals won the President's Trophy in 2010, they were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Montreal Canadiens. The Capitals lost that series in seven games, blowing a 3-1 series lead. The Caps also blew a 3-1 series lead last year, meaning their success will be measured in the postseason.
