www.sportsecyclopedia.com/Unlikely Crusade In the year's directly after World War II an unlikely basketball powerhouse arouse in Massachusetts. Led by point guard Bob Cousy, tiny Holy Cross went to back-to-back Final Fours, winning in 1947 and taking third a year later. The Crusaders remained a strong team into the 50s reaching the Elite Eight in 1953. However, as the sport of basketball grew, Holy Cross faded. Making only sporadic NCAA Tournament appearances since, Holy Cross had not won a tournament game since 1953. When February ended it looked like Holy Cross would be a non-factor, posting a record of 10-19. However, the Crusaders stunned the Patriot League, winning four road games to take the Conference Tournament. Ticketed for the play in game, Holy Cross continued its unlikely run Wednesday beating Southern in a West Region play in game 59-55 in Dayton. With the win Holy Cross enters the field of 64 looking to make history against #1 seed Oregon.
