www.sportsecyclopedia.com/1936: The first stock car race is held on Daytona Beach's road course. A total of 27 cars start the race, but only ten finish as the race is shortened from 250 miles to 241 as the incoming tide leaves the track only one car wide. The 3.2-mile course includes a 1.5 mile straightaway. Many cars stall in the sand dunes making turns, as Milt Marion of St. Albans, New York emerges as the race winner.
