www.sportsecyclopedia.com/Bumper to Bumper In perhaps the greatest final lap in the history of the Daytona 500, Denny Hamlin surged from fourth place to capture the checkered flag inches ahead of Martin Truex. Hamlin who won his first Daytona 500 made his push on the last lap after sitting fourth surged past Kyle Busch and made a push for the lead battling Truex and Matt Kenseth. During the battle Kenesth who had been out in front got caught in traffic and slipped to finish 14th, while Truex and Hamlin battled side by side for the lead. As the finish line approached it was Denny Hamlin winning by a bumper in the closest finish in the history of the Great American Race since electric scoring at .01 seconds. The win for Denny Hamlin marked the first time that a Toyota captured the Daytona 500 and ended a 23-year drought for Joe Gibbs racing who had a big day with Kyle Busch finishing third, while Kennesth led until the final lap.
