Trader Phil is 74 today. The first NHL player to score 100 points in a season. The trade getting him to Boston and out of Boston were two of the best trades in NHL history as far as I'm concerned. I don't think there is any debate that getting Esposito, Hodge and Fred Stanfield for Gilles Marotte, Pit Martin, and goalie Jack Norris was the best trade ever. Coach Don Cherry was not a big Esposito fan and wanted him out. The Bruins sent Carol Vadnais and Espo to the New York Rangers for Brad Park, Joe Zanussi and Jean Ratelle. I won't even talk about how good Park was but I will say Ratelle was a great hockey player for the Bruins. I have no idea who Zanussi is or was.
Are there any old time Rangers fans that would like to chime in. I would love to hear your perspective. We used to have a great rivalry at one time. The Rangers had some awesome players in the 60's/70's. Even though I'm a Boston guy, growing up, Ed Giacomin was my role model. I adored him and wanted to be as good as him. I met him in the lobby of the Boston Garden after the 1970 NHL All Star game. I was such an idiot that I didn't realize it was him I was talking to until my friend Joe D caught up to us just as Eddie G was getting into a cab. I was giving him an evaluation of his performance and he seemed to agree with me. Putting him on waivers in favor of John Davidson in goal has to be one of the most phuqed up moves anyone has ever made. Every time I watch the video of Giacomin's return to MSG as a Red Wing I get very emotional. www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJeXbfEHVR8 Hey, I'm just thankful that I got to see him play. BTW my son has a puck autographed by Brad Park.
