www.sportsecyclopedia.com 1976: Rick Monday of the Chicago Cubs rescues old glory at Dodger Stadium when two protestors take the field to burn the American Flag. Monday playing in Centerfield runs over and snatches the flag before a man and his 11-year old son are able to light the flag on fire. The Los Angeles Dodgers would win the game 5-4 in ten innings, but Rick Monday would become a national hero receiving a bicentennial commendation from President Gerald Ford.
