www.sportsecyclopedia.com Island Revival For the first time in 23 years the New York Islanders are advancing to the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs after a dramatic 2-1 win in double overtime over the Florida Panthers on Sunday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. It was the Islanders third overtime win in the six games series. The Islanders had not won a playoff series since 1993, entering the series a season before the Panthers played their first game. After a double overtime win in Game 5, the Islanders looked to close things out at home, but trailed 1-0 late in the third period. With the goalie pulled, the Islanders tied the game with 54 seconds left on a goal by John Tavares. After the first overtime Tavares again scored the game winner 10:41 into double OT putting home a rebound after missing his initial shot. The Islanders will next face the defending Eastern Conference Champion Tampa Bay Lightning.
