www.sportsecyclopedia.comUnder Pressure As the Stanley Cup Playoffs begin no team has greater expectations and more to lose than the Washington Capitals. The Capitals were the best team in the NHL all season, running away with the President's Trophies with a record of 56-18-8, more wins than any other season in franchise history. However, the playoffs have often been where nightmares happen for the Caps who have only been to the Conference Finals twice and the Stanley Cup Finals once. The Capitals history is full of crushing postseason letdowns, blowing 3-1 series leads five different times including last season and 2010 the last time they won the President's Trophy. The Capitals looked tight early as the game was scoreless until late in the second period when John Carlson scored on the power play. Jay Beagle would add a goal late in the third as their defense limited the Flyers to 19 shots, scoring a 2-0 series opening win at the Verizon Center.
