1966: Nearly two decades after Jackie Robinson made his debut another color barrier is broken when Emmett Ashford becomes the first black umpire in the majors. Working for the American League Ashford, makes his debut on Opening Day at DC Stadium as the Washington Senators host the Cleveland Indians. Emmett Ashford would work until the 1970 World Series one year past the AL's mandatory umpire retirement of 55.
