1981: Fernando Mania is born as Fernando Valenzuela pitches a complete game shutout on Opening Day at Dodger Stadium against the Houston Astros. A 20-year old rookie from Mexico, Valenzuela gets the start when Jerry Reuss is unable to start due to injury. Blanking the Astros 2-0 and allowing five hits and five strikeouts is just the start for Fernando Valenzuela who goes on to win the Rookie of the Year and Cy Young.
