The USC star had signed earlier with the Atlanta Braves, but the contract was voided when he took part in an exhibition game for the Trojans. He was also unable to return to USC due to the contract. After a threat to sue MLB, Commission William Eckert offer Seaver in a lottery, where the Mets are drawn out of hat that included the Cleveland Indians and Philadelphia Phillies.
